Natural UV Defense

for darker skin

Because of their melanin density and efficacy, darker skins don't burn as easily as lighter skin but they also tend to be more vitamin D deficient. They also suffer from premature and accelerated aging.

“Blacks don’t crack” … really?

While darker skins have a stronger tolerance against UV in general, they’re not totally off the hook when it comes to nasty UV-A rays and their damages such as photoaging. UV-A rays break down the collagen and proteins in the skin’s matrix (their role is to keep the skin looking youthful and plump), they penetrate deeper in the skin than UV-B rays and cause lines and wrinkles. Lighter skins tend to primarily experience fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots while darker skins tend to see “sagging of the skin, loss of volume from the face, and hyperpigmentation,” says Jeanine Downie, M.D., a dermatologist in Montclair, N.J. Regardless of the color of your skin, time in the sun will accelerate aging and it starts as early as in your 20’s. It might take longer for darker skin to show signs of photoaging, but they’re happening, no matter what.

Why it matters

1. UV-A RAYS CREATE DAMAGE ON DARK SKIN TOO

While lighter skins tend to primarily experience fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots, darker skins tend to see “sagging of the skin, loss of volume from the face, and hyperpigmentation,” says Jeanine Downie, M.D., a dermatologist in Montclair, N.J. Regardless of the color of your skin, time in the sun will accelerate aging and it starts as early as in your 20’s. It might take longer for darker skin to show signs of photoaging, but they’re happening, no matter what.

2. DARK SKIN INDIVIDUALS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO SKIN CANCER

Research suggests that many patients and physicians believe that non-white people are “immune” to common skin cancers. They aren’t. This myth may have come from the statistic that the Black community has a lower incidence of skin cancer.

However, what’s left out of the conversation is: Black folks who do develop skin cancer may be more likely to receive a late-stage prognosis. Studies show that black people are four times more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage melanoma and tend to succumb at a rate of 1.5 times more than white people with a similar diagnosis.

Regardless of your skin type, the scalp is where the deadliest melanomas happen.

3. DARK SKIN are often morE prone to acne and breakouts

Because it clogs pores, SPF and sunscreen in general tend to aggravate acne, sebum secretion and breakouts, with all skin types. Our serum provides the right level of hydration thanks to naturally derived hyaluronic acid, and many of our customers with oily skin like to use it alone.

Featuring only natural filters and antioxidants - unlike sunscreen that uses synthetic filters - our serum is gentle to the skin and helps with the regulation of sebum. Our satisfaction surveys show that 96% of our customers notice a reduction of breakouts after using our serum over several weeks.

Behind the products

FAQ: What about SPF?

All French dermatologists agree on the fact that during regular days, even more during days spent indoors, SPF has absolutely no use whatever the skin tone and color. They also alert on the toxicity of the SPF filters and of the consequences of these filters on our health when applied every day, starting with hormone disruptions, risks of cancer and more.

They recommend to use sunscreen during prolonged exposure when at the beach or at the park: besides protective clothing, sunscreen has to applied in sufficient quantity and replenished every 2 hours or more to be efficient.

FAQ: Is Skinergies a sunscreen?

Skinergies' products are not sunscreen per se. Sunscreens use filters that block the penetration of UV-B rays (not so much UV-A despite the broad spectrum claim) into the skin, over a limited duration (1-2 hours max, and only if properly applied). Sunscreen also prevents the synthesis of vitamin D. While sunscreen is recommended to use at the beach and during situations of prolonged exposure to UV-B rays, it cannot do much against every day rays, mostly composed of UV-A.

FAQ: Why would I want to stimulate my melanin?

Despite your skin color, your melanin gets less active because of our increasingly indoor lifestyle. Our naturally derived peoptide stimulates the efficacy of your melanin, and boosts its inner capacity.

FAQ: Can I use the serum in addition to sunscreen?

You sure can ! If you want to use sunscreen or SPF based moisturizer/makeup every day, Incidental Sun Smart Serum will take over once your SPF fades away which usually happens within 1 hour or so after you apply it. When applied in the morning, our serum will provide continuous protection throughout the entire day, without the need to replenish.

Incidental Sun Scalp & Hair Mousse serves as your scalp's defense system, since there's no real sunscreen for the scalp and hair on the market. As a bonus, it will also help delaying the greying of hair roots.

CLINICAL STUDIES

DNA PROTECTION AGAINST UV-A AND UV-B

When measured after 2 weeks, the capacity of Incidental Sun Smart Serum’s UV-A filter to neutralize free radicals was slightly superior to that of a sunscreen with synthetic filters, with 1% UV-A filter and 4% UV-B filter.
